Campaign for more GPs in Redbridge

As I’m sure you are aware GP (General Practioner) services in Redbridge are somewhat sporadic, with many patients having to wait weeks for an appointment, especially with multi-practice clinics, resulting in extra strain on the Accident and Emergency department at King George and other Hospitals. The old-fashioned single practices, of which there are a few left, do not seem to suffer this problem.

Started by the Seven Kings and Newbury Park Residents’ Association there is a campaign aiming to persuade Redbridge Council to make commercial investments in purpose-built GP premises around Redbridge. This is in line with their stated commercial property investment strategy and will give a good rental return to the borough and ease the introduction of additional GPs into Redbridge. New GPs will not have to make an upfront and onerous investment in property. We know this can work as this model has been tried and tested in Basildon to good effect.

We (B21) were not allowed to attend the initial meeting on 25 May with the MP for Ilford South, Mike Gapes, as he only wanted to recieve Ilford South constituents, but we did have a presence in the form of the indomitable Andy Walker. Mr Gapes had to withdraw at the last minute, but it transpired that he was due to shortly have a meeting with the CCG and the team were told he would raise these concerns at that meeting.

Strangely, the MP for Ilford North Wes Streeting, did welcome a meeting with the same team, who are not Ilford North constituents, on 1 June. He was receptive to the message and undertook to raise the issue with the Leader of the Council, Jas Athwal.

There will now be a Delegation to Full Council on Thursday 21 June 2018. The meeting starts at 7:15pm but before that there will be a campaign photoshoot outside the Town Hall (side entrance) at 6:30pm. We need as many people there as possible even if you don’t wish to enter the building and listen to the “council speak”.
