Introducing ssafa

You may have seen posters on our eNotice Board publicising fund raising concerts for this charity. They are sent in by our local contact, also a B21 member and retired Major. I recall watching military bands marching up and down Holloway Road on Sunday mornings when I was a young boy back in the days when the A1 was deviod of motorised traffic on the sabbath. These days the bands have been driven [sic!] indoors and these local concerts take place at the Queen's Theatre in Hornchurch. Next one is on 26th October.

From our local Branch:

The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association was founded in 1885, primarily to relieve distress among the families of soldiers and sailors. It later took responsibility for airmen’s families. It is a national charity that is organised and operated on a county basis. In London North East, all the members of our Branch are highly trained volunteers who give their time freely. The Branch is organised into four Divisions to provide caseworker coverage for the whole of London North East, Barking and Dagenham — Havering — Redbridge — Waltham Forest and Newham.

SSAFA’s purpose is to help serving and ex-service men and women and their wives, husbands, partners and dependent family members, whenever they need friendship, advice or assistance, at any time from the day their service starts and for the rest of their lives. This lifetime eligibility for help continues for widows and widowers, after divorce, for people separated from established partnerships, and for dependent children. We do not sit in judgement; we simply help people to sort out problems—in agreement with them and as fast as possible.

We are available, at the end of a telephone, through email or by letter, to do everything possible to relieve stress or to solve a problem. Whether this is through practical help, advice or friendship, we will discuss the matter with you and agree with you the action to be taken. You can come to us with any problem or request— we do not limit the type of problem that we will deal with, or the type of help that might be obtained. Instead, we will examine with you the issue at hand and all possible courses of action to resolve the situation. We will see it through with you to the end—we will not abandon you during the process.
