Coming up on Saturday 22 April 2017 is The Big Dig, sponsored by Capital Growth, during which hundreds of volunteers pull on their wellies and head outside to help community gardens get ready for the new growing season. It’s an opportunity for new visitors and volunteers to discover the joys of growing food in the city.
Here in Redbridge we have one event listed. It’s ASNet’s secret garden behind the Cranbrook Centre in Valentines Park.
Originally a Bowls clubhouse and yard area, the garden was full of brambles, rubbish and two large water tanks. It has now been renovated into a mini raised bed allotment with a greenhouse suitable for people with disabilities. Another area is a herb and sensory garden overlooking the lake. A paved area has been installed to accommodate wheelchairs and a corner arbour to sit and enjoy the view. Wood chippings will be spread between the plants. More plants are still needed to finish the area.
On the day help is needed with the mini allotment and herb garden, trimming the laurel hedge with secateurs [please bring a pair to use]. There will be refreshments, face painting, film demonstration, nutrition and health advice on eating your own produce and to shop smart, IT support, free gardening magazines whilst they last. There is a Children's playground close to the Cranbrook centre.
