Name that Square

At the Redbridge Cabinet meeting on 22nd July 2014, the Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration, Cllr Helen Coomb, announced that there would be a public competition on the naming of the remodelled paved area between the Leisure Centre and the Library in Barkingside High Street.

There will be a two week period from now until Wednesday 3rd September to submit suggestions for a new name. This can be done at the Library where you can get a form (below) and post it in a ballot box. Alternatively you can submit your suggestions over at Redbridge-i but don't forget to let us know in the comments below.

There will then be a sifting process to produce a short list of 3 potential names followed by a ballot on those options. The panel will consist of local ward councillors, a business representative and a representative from the community. The winner will be announced on Saturday 27th September 2014 at the Barkingside Light Night event.

  1. Having experienced the excruciatingly slow progress made on the new square I doubt whether the 3 people currently working on the project will have finished in 4 weeks time.
I watched from the (closed) front entrance of the Swimming Pool today as the only contractor I could see working tried to fix the broken wheel on his wheelbarrow.
The staff in the pool advised me that the project was due for completion at the beginning of July.
The only name I can think of at present is:
    "Unfinished"

  3. What is the point of a nice new square if the rest of the High Street looks so run-down.

    1. Good point - which some of us made when the present work was first mooted.

    2. If I felt your assertion was realistic I would reply that you have to start somewhere.

  4. What a bunch of dismal desmonds!

Stop bitching and start thinking positively

    How about Graham Borrott Square?

  5. Harold Moth Plaza (incorporating the Cllr Alan Wrinberg Memorial Pi**oir) ???

  6. How about Eternity Place - because nobody seems to know when it'll be finished. There's still a great deal to done and most of it is a load of cobbles. (See original plans.)

  7. Actually, I've just had another thought. What about Undulation Park because the pocket park, as you will observe, is a right load of hillocks.
Or perhaps Dolly Parton Park (for the same reason).

    1. Hi Alfred,
Have you received your Teletubby suit for the opening of the pocket park? Your 3 co-stars will be Morris, Harry and the Portly One.

  8. Glad you consider I still need one, B21. Unfortunately, or fortunately really, I hope to be away on holiday at the time of this earth shattering event but thanks for the offer.

  9. In your infinite wisdom, B21, do you know if a date has yet been set for the real opening ceremony when the the thing will finally be completed and all those old cobbles have been removed? (I do not refer to the rejected council members but to those round stony things...oh I dunno though!). Given a few mild winters perhaps a joint celebration in time for the coronation of George VII?

    1. Come off it, Alfred - Kenson's will not finish their jobs that quickly. Not chased enough by the council.
