Fairlop Fair

So, what are you planning to do next Friday. The boring usual stuff? The tedium of routine? It’s going to be HOT, apparently, so you don’t want to be stuck on the Central Line, do you? Why not book a days leave and pop over to Fairlop Waters. Bring a picnic, a hamper, break out the champers, wear a top hat and don’t forget the parasol.

This is not an organised event. Why do we need someone else to organise something for us? Why don’t we just do it? I believe in modern parlance it’s called a flash mob, as in flash flood in case you are wondering about the term “flash”. So you can bring the children.

The place is undergoing some extensive improvements, why not take a peek and see how that money we won is being spent?

Here is a consultation document [PDF 3.5Mbts] – Fairlop Waters Signage Strategy, which will give you some clues as to what’s going on.

And mind the toxins wafting from the water!

  3. Whats the point? with uneducated scare mongering in the media putting people off. (this happens EVERY YEAR, The Enviroment Agency chuck in a few bales of straw and within a couple of months the algae dissapears.

Coupled with the small lake angling membership dwindling (unauthorised visitors can now do what they want, eat fish stocks, have barbeques, drink alcohol etc...) coupled with counsellors asking for, more information, AFTER receiving detailed officer reports on the matter.

Anglers have now been banished to the furthest bank on Fairlop big lake (south side), all other banks are off limits (east , west, north banks), and the hours that they can fish have further been curtailed.

Yet it is these very anglers who pay for their season tickets, but see the banks / lakes they can fish shrink further still.

This is the ONLY borough in the whole of England that seperates different lake users to use seperate parts of the lake, I am sure if I looked hard enough, there would be a anti discrimnatory law AGAINST this policy.

Time to let ALL users (who pay)free access to the lakes that they wish to fish / Sail / Surfboard.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the Pay and Display parking meters that will soon be erected to fleece yet more revenue from users on TOP of their season tickets.

Is it any wonder, why a generation of anglers left the boroughs lakes, and how their offspring have been put off angling, and prefer to hang on street corners causing mayhem.

(I gave up fishing when they shut down most of Hainault Lake)

Time to READ the report before we lose more of our dwindling fish stocks to foreign nationals who are allowed to barbeque fish caught in their native countries lakes, so think the same rules apply here, and encourage our youth to partake in what is a peaceful calming activity, that encourages, patience, ingenuity, and respect for nature.

  4. "Whats the point?"

To have fun. Be joyous. Appreciate our environment. I recognise that you are somewhat disheartened by the actions or lack of that are being effected for redbridge anglers, but the plan was to go for a picnic. You dont need a fishing rod to go for a picnic. A blanket, a basket and a spot of fair weather should do the trick. Perhaps you will appreciate the area for what it is, realising that it can be enjoyed without the need to fish. Ether that or you can stay at home and play with your tackle. Sorry.

  5. Poor Newbie, on the receiving end of a tirade!
I am not going to be mean to him , because I think we are all different and that although angling for pleasure is not to my taste, I eat fish, so,...!
But, what is keeping me really entertained is the ideas of sharing the water facilities amongst various sports. Windsurfers and anglers sharing the same water edge? Can't see it!
Although I suppose the wind conditions necessary for windsurfing successfully might mean that angling would not be feasible at the same time. Also, a lot of anglers seem to be fishing at night, so it might be possible after all to accommodate more than one activity at the same location.
Re the toxic algae situation,... if a couple of bales of barley straw sort out the problem, why not place them in place before the seasonal problem, a bit like sun lotion before you get sunburnt!
    Logical thinking, mmm?

  6. Staying at home and "playing with my tackle" could be viewed as an insult..i'e calling me a wanker...

But Hey I have been called worse, took it on the chin, and kept calling it how I saw it.

EVERYONE can enjoy the lakes TOGETHER, when fishemen came into close contact with boat users and surfers, there was tension at first.

HOWEVER, after the anglers realised that boats and surfers could cut throught their fishing lines with impunity, INGENUITY kicked in.

Anglers devised BACK LEADS when fishing sailing lakes.

Anglers would cast out their bait and tackle to sit on the lake bed, tighten down the line so that there was a slight angle, from the rod tip to the tackle on the bottom of the lake.

They would then clip on a BACK LEAD to the line, above the tip ring of the rod, so that the line went at 90 degrees to the rod tip, keeping the line along the bottom of the lake, out of reach from boats and surfboards.

Boats and other water craft can come as close as they like, but with the line entering the water at 90 degrees from the rod tip, and following the bottom of the lake bed, solved the problem of anglers and other lake users comming into conflict.

  7. Is there NO ONE out there is la la land who isn't going to sleep and ACCEPTING EVERYTHING that is fed to us as being good for us? What possible reason is there for introducing parking meters at that end of the lake? People go there to walk, play and get some good old fashioned relaxation. How can one do that with the sword of a parking ticket hanging over one's head? (Hurry up kids - get round the lake - the ticket runds out in 30 seconds!! (Oh look that little stroll cost us £50 quid! We should all be FURIOUS at this treatment. Oh and please don't tell me to leave the car at home. There is no other means of transport past Fairlop - and I can't get three of us on a bike! Plus the dog of course. We put up with it in hospital grounds because most of us were under the misguided belief that the money went to the hospital. It does not - the majority goes to private enterprise - WAKE UP RESIDENTS and revolt! If parking meters are put up - I will stay out and I urge anyone to do the same!
