666

The first Barking Abbey was founded by St. Erkenwald, Bishop of London, for his sister Saint Ethelburga in 666, as a missionary centre.

In London the telephone exchange 666 is Croydon. In the United States, Louisiana successfully petitioned to have their telephone exhange number changed from 666 and Route 666 has been renumbered Route 491.

The A666 is a major road which runs from Pendlebury to Langho in Lancashire.

The bus route 666 runs from Ashford to Faversham in Kent.

In January this year an EDM in Parliament calling for the disestablishment of the Church of England was numbered 666.

In 1999, seat 666 at the European Parliament was left vacant.

ISO 666 is all about the Mounting of grinding wheels by means of hub flanges.

The number 666 is the sum of the first 36 natural numbers and thus a
triangular number. It is also the sum of the squares of the first seven prime numbers.

The
Roman numeral representation of the number 666 (DCLXVI) uses once each the Roman numeral symbols with values under 1,000, occurring in descending order of their respective values (D = 500, C = 100, L = 50, X = 10, V = 5, I = 1).

666 is also the “number of the beast” in the bible and this post is the 666th published on this blog.

  6. What is Morris saying exactly? I am not pre 1940 but pretty close.
Does Morris think that, because of their age, they should quit the job and join the moaning club?
To be honest, I don't think it is age which is altering their judgement, it's misplaced trust in somebody old enough to know better, somebody old enough to collect a bus pass, but who knows that, that would be a ridiculous waste of money.
Oh, I am a little six, six, six devil!)

  12. Just for the sake of being awkward, ( moi!) and displaying both ignorance and desire to learn.
666 depends on the decimal system.
I suppose I could look in wikipedia but somebody might know.
Was the decimal system in use when the Bible was originally written? I don't suppose they were using Roman Numerals but a number system must have been used.
I think I know that Arabic Numbers were acquired from the Sanscrit system.
All very interesting on a scorching afternoon.

  13. Yes, scorchio, innit!

666 appears in the New Testament in the book of Revelations, so they probably were using Roman Numerals. Scholars interpret this number as a code for the Roman Emperor, coz they didn’t want to get fed to the lions. Apparently the original number is 616. See
    wiki.
