Rebel With A Cause

Cllr Harold MothSir

The news that Councillor Harold Moth has resigned the Conservative Group whip should be welcomed by nobody who truly believes in democracy.

Undoubtedly, as John Sharrock of Barkingside 21 identifies, Harold has been a thorn in the flesh of certain leading members of the Conservative Group. In so doing he has also been their conscience – which they have chosen at their peril to ignore, and have picked on him for every possible petty misdemeanour whilst choosing to gloss over their own less than perfect records.

On 20 May 2004 six Conservative councillors absented themselves from a Council meeting, cynically sending apologies for “lateness”, and stood in the town hall car park whilst the Conservative majority administration led by Allan Burgess was defeated in the council chamber bringing a temporary halt to the Conservative leadership of the council, and leading to Allan Burgess’s resignation as Leader. Those six included the current Leader, another current cabinet member, and the current Conservative whip who is also, apparently, to be the borough’s first citizen from 8 May. If she achieves it, the intention is that another of those six will be the Deputy Mayor. They have pursued a witch-hunt against Harold Moth ever since May 2004 and are presumably now gloating at what they feel they have achieved.

People’s memories are longer than those councillors might think. They should not dismiss the thought that, come 7 May 2010, they may well be laughing on the other side of their faces.

Good luck to you for the future Harold. Politics needs more people of conscience and fewer cloned apparatchiks.

Yours faithfully
MORRIS HICKEY

  1. Hear, Hear!

Harold Moth is the only candidate I voted for at the last council election, because I know he fights for things I want to see happen in the borough and opposes things I don't want to see happen.

With Harold gone, there is no way I'll be casting a vote for those arrogant Tories who seem so keen to destroy what's best in the borough and replace it with their costly megalomaniac fantasies.

And where does it leave democracy when there is nobody to vote for?

  3. Councillor Moth's action is a great loss to the Conservatives and an enormous gain for independent thought and action. I have always thought that his opinions and actions represent the highest standards of public responsibility. At Area Three meetings his consideration for residents always eclipses the dismal glimmer which emanates from most of the other councillors present. His has always been a blinding light of clarity and commonsense. I have always thought him to be too practical to be a politician Good luck to you, Councillor Moth. They may need you, but you certainly don't need them. (I assume Harold Moth will still stay on as a councillor even though not a Tory one. He's still there to vote for,I hope, coxsoft art.)
